Meals for Homeless Seniors in Lebanon

Meals for Homeless Seniors in Lebanon

During the Kennedy-Lugar Youth and Exchange Study (YES) year in the US, Lebanese students gain extensive experience in community service. Upon their return to Lebanon, many of these students take what they learned and lookout for needs in their communities which they can contribute to. On Saturday June 30, 2012, YES alumni came together to serve a community lunch for homeless and underprivileged senior citizens.

Seventeen YES alumni from all regions of Lebanon collaborated with the Church of God in Beirut for this worthy effort. Alumni served a hot meal and dessert to forty seniors, then washed dishes and cleaned up the hall. Additionally, students performed songs from the 1980’s for the seniors who thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment; many laughed, danced and sang along with the students! Students also offered each senior a gift package that included canned foods and a bathing kit.

The YES alumni reported that they enjoyed connecting with the seniors, and were grateful for this chance to give back to the community. YES alumna, Nancy Mezher (YES ‘2004) stated, “it feels great to be part of these peoples’ happiness!”.
